KeShawn Wilson, or K-Dawg, is hellbent on making a success in the game. He quickly assembles his crew and takes advantage of all the knowledge and contacts he gained while in prison and it starts to pay off. Soon rivalries develop with Dino, a Dominican drug dealer, and two cops are determined to put K-Dawg back behind bars. Facing each challege, K-dawg’s back is covered by his toughass sister China and the ever-elusive hitman Demon.

The author K’wan Foye has written a prime example of a book with editting as brutal as its gangsta character with typos throughout and a poorly designed book. The lack of polish on the physical book is more than made up for in the intensity of this story. There’s no bullshit with K-Dawg’s determination, but K’wan has also brilliantly dug deeper into K-Dawg’s past and revealed the trauma he experienced from an abusive father whose resentment led to a family tragedy. In addition to K-Dawg, K’wan has also created complex characters throughout the book and particularly in China and Demon. China, K-Dawg’s sister, is touch and loyal. An expert in martial arts, she uses her skills to act as K-Dawg’s bodyguard. She is independent and unlike many women portrayed in street fiction. Demon, a hitman hired by K-Dawg, has almost supernatural-like abilities to appear and disappear while doing his jobs. Fans of Marvel comics like the Punisher will love this character and I wish that K’wan would write a book with Demon as a main character.

Part of the description on the back of the back states that this book is “K’wan’s sophomore novel” and that’s a good description. Looking at his book Hoodlum , which I plan to review next, it’s clear to see that his writing has moved to a higher level. However, I don’t want to dismiss this book. Road Dawgz is classic street fiction that lies on the middle ground between old school like Goines and more recently released, and tightly written, street fiction.
