Back in New York City, Seven was the seventh child. But here in Charlotte he’s number one on every ladies’ list. Even behind bars, he managed to sex a female corrections officier who lost her job and found herself pregnant. Now Seven is out of the pen and back on the streets. A small-time dealer with big-time dreams, he’s ready to take care of business - for his baby, his baby’s mother, his slammin’ girlfriend, and his empty wallet. But first, he’s got to play the game with the biggest pushers in town. He’ll be a soldier for The Man. Then he’ll rob the suckers blind before they figure out what’s going down. Sure, it could get him killed. But Seven knows there are things in life worth living for - and things worth dying for. And sometimes you can’t tell the difference. |

I enjoyed this book. It was a quick read, like the other, but developed enough to get the picture.

“Butter tossed him a pair of gloves and a ski mask and a sawed off shot gun. ‘Let’s get that money the fast way - the ski mask way.’” (10)
That sentence perfectly describes the plot and pace of the third book in the G-Unit series of hip-hop novellas. In addition to The Ski Mask Way (add link), G-Unit and 50 Cent also also have created Death Before Dishonor (Nikki Turner) and Baby Brother (Noire). The Ski Mask Way didn’t quite make it up to the same level of storytelling that was in Baby Brother. K. Elliot instead takes us through a fast-paced but weak plot that twists and turns with Seven’s desperate attempts, and bad decisions, to get cash so that his baby can have an operation that will allow him to walk.
While reading The Ski Mask Way, I kept wishing that Elliot would have tried harder to make me like Seven. He has moments of glory, for example, when he is taking about Tookie William’s execution and states”Our Heroes die. They all die: Martin, Malcolm, Tupac, and now Tookie.” (132) Seven longs to be a hero and help his son, but the influence of his partner in crime, Butter, robs him of any chance for hero status.
Also, there are few mistakes like when a robbery victim’s hand are bound with duct tape and then seconds later a Rolex watch is slipped off. I kept thinking how did they get past the tape. Now it might seem petty to complain about such a small thing, but good writing is in the details, and that’s my main isue with this book. Elliot should have taken more time to work out the details.
So would I still recommend this book? Yeah! But I wish it was better. Elliot also wrote Entangled and Street Fame, and I plan on reading/reviewing them soon. Disagree with me? Please share your comments on what you thought of this book or any of the other ones I have reviewed.
